Resources - Local and Regional Non Profit Organizations - Fremont Heritage Commission

The Fremont County Heritage Commission was officially created on September 23, 2008, through formal appointment of commission members by the Fremont County Commissioners.  The County Commissioners appointed seven members from the community at large to provide advice and assistance on matters associated with planning and implementation of the Heritage Commission program. The Heritage Commission consists of seven members demonstrating a representation of the following interests or geographic locations:

  • Canon City area - Peggy Sorenson
  • Florence area (may include Williamsburg, Rockvale, Coal Creek) - Roberta Miller
  • Penrose area - Sherry John
  • Western Fremont County - Carol McNew
  • Heritage museum - Flo Orona.  This consortium of Canon City Museums currently consists of:
    • Royal Gorge Regional/ municipal museum
    • Fremont Center for the Arts
    • Dinosaur Depot Museum
    • Museum of Colorado Prisons
  • Education (RE-1, RE-2, Cotopaxi, Pueblo Community College, etc) - Mary Chamberlain
  • Tourism - Jon Stone

  

All members shall be full-time residents of Fremont County.  The members shall be selected by the Commissioners, based on appropriate geographic representation of the county, and based on representation of interests in cultural, natural, economic, and recreational resources. 

The commission may also include ex officio representation of key governmental or nonprofit representation to be present at all board functions in a non voting capacity.  This representation may include Fremont County, Canon City, Florence, the Gold Belt Byway, Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, and the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area under Colorado State Parks.
