Historic Downtown Canon City

The Historic Clock Tower in downtown Canon City is based on the original courthouse.The original courthouse was moved from 1st and Macon to 4th and Macon before being torn down in 1965.

Compare this to the historic picture of the same building.  This building was built in the time frame that some of our most famous dinosaur excavations were occurring (1882-83)

This book sells in the range of $30 and is knowledgeably written by Larry Thomas Ward.  The book offers the reader an engaging and colorful history of Canon City.

The first Baptist Church on Macon.  There are four main churches in the downtown area with significant heritage.  They include this one, the Episcopal, the Presbyterian, and the Methodist.

   

In June of 2005 under the direction of the Main Street Program a Historic Building Survey of downtown Canon City was completed by Front Range Research Associates (funded by State Historical Grant) and two potential residential districts were surveyed for future designation on local, State, or National Registers.
