Canon City - Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery

This cemetery is particularly interesting in that it has a wide diversity of stories associated with it, in some ways very unique.  Its worth a visit, park outside the gates and be respectful of the site!

A short History of the Cemetery This is a nice historical summary of the cemetery by Mary Ann Thomas.  Thanks much Mary for doing this research!

There is a facinating history of inmates who were executed and buried at Woodpecker Hill in this cemetery.  This is the only headstone there and it has a facinating history of its own, discussing the wrongful Joseph Arridy Execution. The cemetery also has a civil war legacy with the Confederate veterans buried on the north side of the cemetery and the Union soldiers buring on the south side of the cemetery!    Tom Monaco is providing a guided tour of the cemetery (see prison museum for details).

For me, the most interesting thing about the Greenwood Pioneer Cemetery is the facinating story of Marshall and Amanda Felch.  The depth of this story is well illustrated in the letters written by Marshall Felch and the event above is celebrated in the hands on the land website!
