Travel in Fremont County - Arkansas River

There are some wonderful pictures of the Royal Gorge including several by Henry Jackson.

In this picture President Theodore Roosevelt is seen standing in railroad track!

The hanging bridge and the railroad were constructed well before the bridge!

Many historic photographs are of this hanging bridge.

Construction of the rail line through the Royal Gorge was a difficult engineering exercise and today one of the original elements, the hanging bridge still remains.

Toursists walk across a bridge just above the incline railway at the Royal Gorge Bridge.

This picture is from the summer of 1911 at the north rim of the Royal Gorge.

This is a picture of the Royal Gorge Bridge under construction in 1929.

The Royal Gorge Bridge was an amazing architectural feat and the bridge is one of Colorado's premier attractions today.

The Stout School in Howard

The old Cotopaxi Train Station

The old railroad coming to the Arkansas River from Westcliffe had to loop around the mountain on the left to get down to the river.  This original railroad bed is visible today at Texas Creek.
