Note that four states have counties named for Fremont and he is well known throughout the American West and he has a colorful legacy, even running for president of the United States and serving as a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. His relationship geographically to our Fremont County is probably most closely tied to the fourth expedition in 1848 and 49 which was an attempt at a winter crossing though the mountains of Southern Colorado.
